The Singer, a South Korean film released in July 2020, tells the story of an early 1700s Joseon Dynasty singer and the rise of pansori, allegorical songs about the suffering of common men and women. ..

The songs of the old minstrels were meant to entertain and spread justice in a time of suffering. They would tell stories of injustice, of people who were left behind during times of war or economic hardship. These songs would help to make a bit of scratch for wandering hand-to-mouth performers and help to spread the tales of injustice in a time of suffering.

Pansori singers have been serving as a bridge between communities in Japan for centuries, and their music has been used to connect people from all walks of life. The laborious lives of pansori singers likely provided a break – a chance to laugh, cry, dance and commiserate.

In this 118-minute historical drama, Lee Bong-Geun stars as a singer whose wife is abducted by a band of thugs selling their captives into slavery. The Singer acknowledges that corrupt governments are nothing new, with power, money and in-fighting at the crux. ..

The fan club, as we’ll call them, plus the young daughter, serve to lighten the mood throughout. So, it’s not a complete weepy but a balanced tale with an unexpected ending. ..

This year’s London Korean Film Festival featured Jesters: The Game Changers, a film about a group of performers who use their skills to manipulate and deceive others for their own gain. ..

The best bits in this story are the song itself and the way it implies injustice. The backstory of the family is also captivating and keeps you interested. Although we don’t really know why they’re there.

The novel, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,” is a likely piece of history. It is interesting and conjures sympathy. Yet somehow the resolution feels a bit like a plunge pool on a chilly day. It arrives abruptly for the pace and perhaps too cheerily compared to the magnitude of struggle. ..

Just a little extra detail around the supporting characters may have added depth and cushion. Without that, the story feels a little random at the end. Luckily, the solution is clever rather than magic, with an advocate cleverly tucked in.

The story itself could use some smoothing out in the latter quarter to make it more emotionally engaging. ..
