Netflix has been a great platform for original programming, and with their recent investment in the streaming service, they are only going to continue to make a name for themselves. With Fate: The Winx Saga, they have taken a risk on an idea that could be successful and made it their own. This new series is not only entertaining, but it also provides important messages about women and empowerment.

The show was cancelled after its first season due to low ratings, but a fan-made continuation called Winx Club: The New Adventures began airing in October of that year. It follows the same characters and follows their adventures in a new world where they must balance school, love and magic.

Fate: The Winx Saga is an animated movie based on the popular children’s book series of the same name. Fans of the books and/or the TV series are likely to be disappointed with how little of the source material has been adapted into the movie. However, there is enough here to recommend for those looking for a dark, moody teen romance. ..

The new Winx Club movie is definitely darker than the show it’s based on. It shares very little similarities to the show, and in a way, it feels like a heady blend of Riverdale, Sabrina, and Vampire Diaries. ..

While the story has some nice plot beats, and one wonderfully touching nod to the original in the final episode, all of this good will falls apart thanks to a rushed pace and some pretty disappointing worldbuilding. In fact, the latter point is borderline immersion-breaking as it becomes difficult to tell whether you’re in the magic world or the real world. ..

Fate: The Winx Saga is a story about magic school and the students who attend it. It’s normal because the main character, Bloom, rocks up on campus.

Tecna is not included in the show because it does not meet the standards set for the program.

The world beyond Althea is a dangerous place, and the characters here are only given limited information about it. The exposition is slow and incomplete, making it difficult to understand what’s happening.

The first episode of “Stranger Things” borrows plot from the Harry Potter series, something that the show openly acknowledges and jokes about.

Fate: The Winx Saga revolves around a chosen one of sorts; a powerful adopted fairy who doesn’t know what happened to her birth parents. She attends the magical boarding school called Alfea and finds herself confronted by Queen Bee Stella, who’s romantically linked to a handsome boy called Sky. ..

Stella is a fairy who joins with other fairies to form the Winx Club. The Winx Club is a group of fairies who have moments together, but Bloom soon learns that the teachers are keeping secrets and could well know what happened to her parents. ..

The show’s basic premise is that there are six episodes that follow the main plot points you’d expect from a story like this, with very little room for character development and meaningful arcs. Outside of Bloom and Sky, there are no compelling characters here. The flippant romances and rivalries between the girls feel short-lived due to the quick pace. ..

Aisha and Bloom have a tense relationship around their use of magic. Bloom finds herself more natural at controlling her flames, which causes Aisha to begin resenting her. This creates interesting juxtapositions between them, but these moments are brushed aside in favour of the main plot line. These sort of interesting moments show up repeatedly throughout the season and on reflection, but they don’t do much for the characters’ development.

Despite its flaws, Winx Saga is an entertaining show. The CGI effects are impressive and the action is well-shot. There’s a real desire to watch one more episode, which could easily have run for 10 episodes. In fact, I actually wouldn’t mind if this was like one of those old 24 episode seasons. That way we’d be given a good amount of time to really get to know all these characters properly. ..

The Winx Saga has all the ingredients to be a charming, fantasy offering but its poor worldbuilding and frantic pace suck all the magic out of this one. The story is compelling but its worldbuilding is shoddy and the characters are one-dimensional.
