A Surprisingly Good War Film

The Forgotten Battle is a well-written, gritty war movie that leans into its characters to deliver three parallel narratives. Those expecting a lot of action will be disappointed but the characters are well written and the way everything collides together naturally at the end serves as a nice way to conclude this film.

The film then switches to the perspective of a German soldier who is fighting in the Netherlands. He is surrounded by Allied forces and knows that he will soon be captured. He reflects on his life and how he has been able to survive in this war. He remembers his family and how they have all died in the war. He also reflects on the people of his village, who have all died in the war.

Walcheren Island is a strategic location for the Germans, and this is why Operation Market Garden – a large-scale Allied operation in the Netherlands – was launched in order to take it. ..

Walcheren is a small island in the North Sea, strategically located between the Netherlands and Belgium. It was heavily fortified by the Germans, and was a key part of their Atlantic Wall defense system. In early 1944, Allied forces began landing on Walcheren in an effort to break through the German lines. The three narratives focus on different British troops: William Sinclair, a cocky RAF pilot who crashes on Walcheren; Private Joe Henshaw, a young soldier who is new to the front line; and Sergeant Jimmy Keogh, an experienced veteran. All three men are fighting for their lives against overwhelming odds. The eventual conclusion of the story is that all three men survive and return home to tell their stories. Dirk’s story begins in the small town of Walcheren, Netherlands. He is a teenager who stands up to the Germans, but his actions lead to three soldiers losing their lives. This single action sees him go into hiding, kept in the basement and leaving his sister Teun in grave danger. The focus of the second plot is on Dirk’s sister Teun, who is in danger from the Germans.

Dutch soldier Marinus is enlisted with the German army during World War II. He begins to question his purpose and just whose side he should be fighting on as the offensive is within his homeland. ..

The story does well overall although those expecting a lot of fighting and a non-stop chain of action and tension will be left disappointed. This is much closer to a character study and because of that, the middle portion of this film does tend to get bogged down as it shifts between the different players. However, sandwiched around this are bursts of action, typified by a pretty exciting battle sequence lasting around 15-20 minutes at the end. ..

The action is gritty, well shot and pretty accurate. I really enjoy the guns and costume design all look authentic and there’s a real boots-on-the-ground feel that mirrors the tension and visceral action seen in Band of Brothers or Saving Private Ryan.

While the opening skirmish, involving a rocket launcher blowing up a tank, is probably the best pick of the bunch, the action at the end should be enough to make the patient wait until that point worth it. ..

The cinematography in “The Battle of the Bulge” is stunning. One establishing scene late on, as the sky paints a murky grey and wisps of smoke cross the battlefield, paints silhouettes of Allied soldiers walking toward the camera. It’s hauntingly beautiful and these picturesque moments crop up throughout the movie. ..

The Allied fighter pilots have come to fight.

The film is set in a small town in Maine during the early 1800s and tells the story of three people: a girl named Abby (Avery Brooks), her father (John Hawkes) and a man named John (Adam Driver). The three stories are connected, but the film doesn’t try to force them together. Instead, it lets the stories develop naturally.

The Forgotten Battle is a good war movie that is set in 2021. The action is well choreographed and the visuals are stunning. The three stories work well together and the middle portion of the movie is a bit slow but overall it is an excellent movie.
