The Buck Stops Here

The Harder They Fall is a stylish crime thriller that feels like it could have been made by Clint Eastwood himself. The characters are unique and echo elements of his old films, and the story is simple but effective. This is a great movie to watch on Netflix, and it’s sure to please fans of the genre.

Nat is a young boy who is forced to watch his parents be brutally murdered at the hands of ruthless outlaw Rufus Buck and his crew. Nat’s only hope is to find a way to save them before it’s too late.

As the two gangs clash, the stakes get higher and higher, with each side desperate to win back what they believe is rightfully theirs. But as the heat builds, Love begins to realize that he may have made a mistake in trusting his enemies… and that maybe eventreacherous Trudy and Cherokee Bill are just as bad as he thought.

The Harder They Fall is a western that borrows heavily from old westerns. The film’s opening act features quick wit and biting humour, which is similar to Django Unchained. The story itself is set up and executed similarly to many other westerns of the 60’s and 70’s.

The cast does a great job in bringing the characters to life, with Idris Elba shining brightest as the ruthless and cold Rufus Buck. There are some great moments with his character across the run-time of the movie, and his counterpart, played by Jonathan Majors, has just the right amount of inner conflict to make him easy to root for. ..

This is a fictional retelling of the Buck gang, which the film is quick to point out during its opening credit scroll. With that in mind, if you can go into the film knowing this is largely a fictional story, you’re likely to have a much better time. ..

The Harder They Fall is a beautifully rendered picture that captures the feel of a classic western. The sets are brilliantly designed, the soundtrack is pure fire, and the long establishing shots of the dusty deserts and shanty towns lives and breathes western territory. If Hell or High Water is a modern western in the conventional sense, The Harder They Fall is a better example of how to modernize a classic genre while keeping all the components the same.

This film feels like a love letter to the genre, with director and writer Jeymes Samuel doing a great job in replicating some of Eastwood’s classic movies. Despite the cliched story, this actually feels much closer to a love letter of the genre, rather than a blatant rip-off.

The film has its flaws though. The movie is too long for its own good, and at 2 hours 19 minutes, this could have shaved off about 30-40 minutes and been a lot stronger for it. This ultimately hogs the pacing, especially during the middle portion of the movie, where everything is gearing up for the final fight. ..

The writing itself is simplistic and easily the one part of this picture that doesn’t quite stand up to the visuals. In the moment that’s absolutely fine but in terms of longevity, one does have to wonder whether this has the same legs something like Unforgiven or Django Unchained have. ..

Despite the flaws, The Harder They Fall is still a decent western revenge movie. It’s a classic western mixed up with a modernized aesthetic and a killer soundtrack. The pacing is a little too slow, but the movie is far too long. The characters and an unexpected twist at the end are just enough to make this cliched dusty road into Western territory worth traveling.

In an effort to prepare for the end of the world, some people are trying to create their own version of it. They’re trying to create a society that is better off before the end comes. Others are just waiting for the end and hoping for the best. But regardless of what you think about whether or not the end is coming, there are some things you can do in order to prepare yourself and your loved ones.
