The basic premise of this show is interesting, but the flaws in the storytelling make it difficult to follow. Episode 1 and 8 are particularly weak, and make the rest of the episode difficult to enjoy.
In 1892, a pirate buried gold on Adak Island worth over $300 million. He died before he could return though, stashing said gold in tin cans across the landscape. His treasure is still out there, somewhere across the inhospitable terrain of this island. The Curse of Oak Island is a show that tells the story of how this treasure was discovered and how it’s being protected today.
The group of treasure seekers set out on a treasure hunt on an uninhabited island, only to find that the island is rigged with explosives. They are not sure where the gold is, but they do know that they need to find it before it explodes.
The premise of the show is alluring, and it’s perfect fodder for dramatic cliffhangers and moments of shock as our team head off in search of the treasure. However, as the episodes progress, the journey turns into somewhat of a farce, with the group blowing up bombs, searching numerous different areas and becoming more and more outlandish in their attempts at justifying where their next dig site is. ..
But the show also has a number of other problems. For one, it often feels like it’s trying too hard to be something it’s not. The characters are often one-dimensional and the plot is often convoluted. There are also a lot of clichés in the writing, which can make for an unenlightening experience.
The show is visually appealing, but the script is weak.
