Netflix has just announced that they will be releasing a new series called “Oitavo” which is set in the Portuguese town of Oitavo. The show is about a group of friends who live in the small town and their experiences with life, love, and family. The series is set to premiere in Portugal on October 3rd.

The story is an interesting blend of telenovela and gritty espionage drama, but the execution can be a bit hit or miss at times. ..

In the early days of the Cold War, Radio Free Europe was a vital tool in spreading freedom and democracy to the people of communist countries. Despite constant Russian interference, the tireless operators at RARET continue to broadcast programming into those countries, even as Russia tries to shut them down. ..

As Joao Vidal begins his mission, he quickly realizes that the KGB is not as honest as they seem. The tape in question is a sensitive one, and if it falls into the wrong hands, it could mean disaster for Russia. To keep things under wraps, Joao must use all of his skills and subterfuge to recover the tape and protect Russia from harm.

The story of “The Transporter” is more than just a tale of a man’s journey to find his missing girlfriend. It’s also the story of two powerful women, one who helps guide Joao on his search and another who ultimately brings him to justice. ..

However, in the second half Joao’s story takes a turn that could have serious consequences for the characters and the story. Joao’s actions are not only illegal but also dangerous, and it is unclear how he will be able to keep his cover while investigating what happened to Mia.

Gloria is an interesting show with a lot of potential, but it falls short in several areas. The first half is strong, but the second half suffers from a weak plot and contrived love story. ..

Gloria does a great job of exploring the conflicted feelings of Joao as he tries to decide which side to support. There are some great moments early on, with Joao’s time in the war explored through flashbacks. This helps round out his character and as the show goes on we do learn more about his time in Angola. There are also a fair few deaths lain in his wake too, from both sides of the conflict.

This is a proper Cold War though, with a lot of spying, stake-0uts and intercepted intel. Don’t expect much James Bond-esque action here, Gloria is all about the espionage thrills. That’s actually a great play and late on there’s a masterful scene of Joao breaking into a hospital and evading authorities, all done through a single tracking camera. Moments like this really help to elevate Gloria.

Despite the good moments, the story feels unfocused and unfulfilling. The focus on Carolina’s current love interest and husband Fernando feels misplaced, and it’s difficult to invest in their story.

While that helps give more context to how much war changes oneself, Joao already has that with his flashbacks, so it renders the scenes irrelevant. Moments like this make the screenplay feel sloppy and hold the show back from being a more endearing watch.

Gloria is a decent watch overall. The acting is good from all involved and the camera work is excellent for the most part. However, the pacing could be better and the visual design could use some improvement.

Gloria is a espionage thriller that does well to sneak past any of its major hiccups. The forbidden romance doesn’t really work, the soapy subplots are a little too formulaic while the open conclusion could put some people off. However, underneath that is a decent plot that’s hard not to see through until the end. If you can go in with some patience and look past the flaws, there’s certainly enough to like here.
