Emma Sullivan’s Into The Deep: The Submarine Murder Case is a 90-minute documentary that takes a unique approach to profiling Peter Madsen, the inventor of the homemade submarine. What we don’t know until the end of the documentary is that Peter Madsen was killed in a submarine accident in 2009.

Into the Deep is an unusual format that at first feels uneven and slow. However, stick with it for 20 minutes and you’ll be completely gripped. ..

This true-crime doc is uniquely positioned in the field because the footage captured here is raw and authentic, with actual shots leading up to and after the disappearance. With film crews operating around this time, we see Kim’s friends and colleagues genuinely concerned for her wellbeing and see how they adjust to different facts that come about when the submarine resurfaces. This really helps with the immersive feel of this.

This documentary is really immersive and helps to drive the story home. The footage from the time feels like it’s right there with you, giving the feeling that you’re actually living through the events. The newspaper clippings from that time are also very helpful in reinforcing the feeling of being a part of this story. The final scene is chilling, making it all the more powerful.

Into The Deep is a documentary that takes you on an amazing journey below the surface of the ocean.
