A Copycat Killer?

Episode 2 of Chimera begins with a businessman sitting in his car in May 1984. That same strange chimera lighter we saw before happens to be sitting next to him, and as he lights it, the entire car explodes into an inferno. ..

Eugene heads back to the crime scene of the apartment building that Jae-Hwan jumped out from. She finds a Chimera up on the wall and realizes this is all incredibly similar to the 1984 case. ..

Kim Hyo-Kyung, a reporter for the local news station, arrives at the hospital where the suspect in the bombing is being treated. She is well-versed in the case and asks questions about it that lead to new information. It is revealed that Wan-Ki wrote an article about the bombing on July 23rd, days before it happened. Eugene, a detective working on the case, and Kim discuss this new information and how it connects to the earlier bombing from 35 years ago. ..

Wan-Ki’s articles that day were not great, as he showed the suspect and his wife’s faces. ..

Episode 5 of “The Good Doctor” revealed that Joo-Seok, the suspect in the arson case, knows more than he’s letting on. In flashbacks, we see Joo-Seok witnessing a waterboarding incident. Wan-Ki is there too, giving him a couple of packs of cigarettes and telling Wan-Ki to contact if anything changes. ..

Jae-Hwan turns his attention to the dashcam footage from Ho-Dong and Young-Sik’s car. Given they were tailing Wan-Ki, it could well give some clues as to what’s going on.

Jae-Hwan and his team track down the person responsible for Chief Go Jae Moon’s coma and finally catch up to them at the hospital. They learn that the person is Joong-Yeop, who was seen at Chief Go Jae Moon’s office just before he went into coma.

Jae-Hwan is suspicious of the new department head, Wan-Ki. He gives off an eerie vibe and Dr. Lee doesn’t seem to care. He mentions the chimera but given that he doesn’t press further, Jae-Hwan is convinced that this could be a possible suspect.

Jerome Edwards, the man Jae-Hwan met at the gambling den that night, is now known as Eugene. He was studying at London’s Queen’s College when he met Wan-Ki and Jerome. Wan-Ki told Jerome that Dr. Lee was a good doctor and that he could help him find a job in America. Jerome agreed to help and used his American contacts to do as much digging as possible.

Eugene is having a lot of fun trying to figure out the unsolvable puzzle. She may have just found something.

The death of Wan-Ki and Jae-Hwan may be related. Joong-Yeob is the main suspect, but it seems like he may have transferred from England around this time too.

Joo-Seok rushes home to find a stranger following him. They taser each other and the figure disappears. Joo-Seok is unsure if he’s been scammed or what, but he decides to take the opportunity to ask the caller what they want from him.

Jae-Hwan heads to Joo-Seok’s apartment, unbeknownst to him what’s happened, and begins looking around. He finds an envelope with a picture inside, featuring a much younger version of his mum. The date is listed as 11/03/1984. However, he also finds the charred remains of the chimera lighter too, immediately realizing that Joo-Seok could be a part of this.

Jae-Hwan begins his search for Joo-Seok, but he’s not the only one looking for him. The police are also on the case. Jae-Hwan knows that he has to find Joo-Seok before anyone else does.

Jae-Hwan eventually finds Joo-Seok, tracking him down to a construction site in Gyeonggi-Do. He’s tied up in the middle of the room with nowhere to go. As he steps forward, Jae-Hwan triggers the water sprinklers, which in turn ignites Joo-Seok. As he goes up in flames, Jae-Hwan is shocked and beside himself with grief. ..

The Episode Review

In the second episode of Chimera, Joong-Yeop is deepening ties to the killer, and Jae-Hwan loses his senior.

Chimera has done well so far in keeping the suspense high right up to this point, and that is especially true here as Eugene and Jae-Hwan investigate the case and notice the links back 35 years ago. ..

It seems like the killer is either a copycat, mirroring what happened in 1984, or the same killer as before. Either way, this show is setting things up nicely for a very dramatic cat and mouse game to ensue. In terms of thrillers, this one does look like it’s going to get a lot more intense over the weeks and the somber ending feels like a proverbial deep breath before plunging into more dramatic waters. ..
