Outer Banks is a show that just seems to work. It has just the right amount of humour, a solid Famous Five/Goonies feel and manages to weave all of this into a decent mystery that progresses at a good pace.

The Society

Similarities – Gripping Mystery & Teens

The Society is a modern-day spin on Lord Of The Flies. It feels slightly overlong across its 10 episodes, and could have done with some tighter editing. The townspeople quickly realize that all the adults are missing and even stranger, the town is now inexplicably surrounded by thick, lush forestry. When the smell finally disappears, the kids realize that their town holds small differences that play a bigger part in the plot further down the line.

The Society’s teens descend into a heady cocktail of teen angst and melodrama in the second half of the film. Between these constant bouts of partying and having sex, they come together to try to figure out what’s happened. This is revealed somewhat in the end. ..

Netflix cancelled The Society during the middle of 2020, but it’s still a fun ride until then.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina is a unique and engaging show that establishes itself as a standout in the genre. The half-witch/half-human Sabrina Spellman gives an impressive performance as she struggles to find her place in the world, while the gruesome and sinister tone makes for an interesting addition to the show.

As Sabrina prepares for her 16th birthday, she is torn between following her heart or following the path that has been laid out for her. She has a happy mortal life with friends and boyfriend Harvey, but she is also aware of the potential for darkness to consume her. She is on the cusp of a very special rite that will welcome her into the world of witchcraft, but she is unsure if she should abandon everything she loves in order to serve the Dark Lord.

This struggle continues right the way through the various seasons, with extra layers of danger and tension added to the fold for good measure. This one’s definitely quite dark, but it’s a decent coming of age series nonetheless.
