The Guilty (2021) Plot Synopsis

The Danish original, released in 2018, tells the story of a young woman who is accused of a crime she didn’t commit. The film follows her fight for freedom as she tries to prove her innocence. The remake, set for release in 2021, is almost identical to the original movie, with only a few changes. ..

Joe Baylor is a police officer who is in for a long night when he works in a 911 call center. He is stressed, on a short fuse, and very clearly worried about his court case the following day.

Joe tries to talk the woman through a difficult kidnapping situation. This includes a series of calls to Emily’s 6 year old daughter Abby, who’s currently at home with baby Oliver.

Joe is the one who has to race against time to try and stop Henry from taking his daughter.

Is Henry really guilty?

Joe becomes more and more invested in helping Emily, and a big twist turns everything upside down. In Joe’s haste to save Emily, he misunderstands the whole situation. Henry is not the culprit here – Emily is.

Joe is convinced that Oliver was killed because he knows about the past and he won’t let Emily go free. He’s determined to find the killer and bring them to justice.

Henry is innocent of all charges and it was Emily who was actually trying to get away with the baby. Unfortunately for her, Joe helped her out and things quickly spiral out of control. The real drama comes before that when Emily climbs up onto a bridge to try and get away with the baby.

Does Emily commit suicide?

Emily is on the phone with Joe, crying. She can hear the sound of cars driving in the background. Joe is trying to get through to her, but she’s not responding. ..

Joe opens up about his past and how he regrets it. Emily decides she wants to be with Oliver, but she survives the jump. Joe saves her life by coming down off the overpass after all.

What happened in Joe’s past?

Joe is a man with a complicated past. We learn about it throughout the film, culminating in the final scenes where it’s revealed what led to his conviction for manslaughter. During an altercation, Joe killed a teenager he thought was the accused - an accident, but one that completely upended his life. ..

Joe is still upset about the break-up and has not been able to move on. He is still angry with Jess and feels like he was wrong to end things.

Joe is struggling to keep track of time and getting dates mixed up. He’s not sure what day it is or how long it has been since he last saw his girlfriend.

Joe’s court case has far-reaching consequences not just for him, but also for Rick. Just days before he is scheduled to give his statement on Joe’s behalf, Rick has a few drinks and appears to be under considerable stress. He also expresses doubts about whether Joe will be able to overcome the charges against him. ..

How does The Guilty end?

After learning Emily and Oliver are both still alive, Joe makes a big decision about his future. He rings Rick to let him know Emily is alive and implores him to tell the truth at the courthouse. After hearing about his drinking it would appear as if he’s aware of what Rick is going through. ..

Joe tells the reporter from the LA Times that he was hung up on and decided not to talk because he was embarrassed.

Joe pleads guilty to manslaughter and is subsequently arrested. Joe faces his past and decides to do the noble thing. ..
