Devilman Crybaby
Similarities – Tone
Critics and fans of the title have different opinions on what makes it so unique, but one common thread is that it is often seen as a dark and disturbing take on the Japanese popular culture. Some viewers find the violence and explicit content too graphic for their taste, while others find it riveting and exciting.
But the story doesn’t stop there. Akira soon realizes that he has more in common with the devil than he thought. The two share a deep connection and begin to explore their true desires and goals together. As they continue to fight against the evil, Akira and the devil come to understand each other even more and begin to share a mutual respect for one another.
The story is about a young girl who is forced to leave her home in order to live with her grandparents, and the artwork in the film is stunning. It’s a simple story but one that’s told well; the artwork is gorgeously rendered and for that alone, it’s worth watching.

Similarities – Animals & Themes
The series BNA is a fascinating Japanese series that explores racism and class divisions under the neon-lit lights of Anima City. With a mystery running throughout the episodes and some likable characters fronting the cast, BNA is a decent anime that bears a lot of similarities to Beastars.

Michiru Kagori is a human who was experimented on in the past to become a beast. She has always been fascinated by the world of beasts and their cultures, and when she learns about the attack on Anima City, she decides to go there to help. She quickly realizes that the city is in trouble, and before long she is involved in the battle between humans and beast-men. In the end, Michiru comes out victorious, but at what cost?
Netflix is currently streaming Beastars, a new series about a powerful, yet misunderstood, animal. The show is probably as close to Beastars as you could get.

Aggretsuko

Netflix’s newest animation, Aggretsuko, is a story about a red panda who frequently uses death metal as a way to vent about her stressful, work-dominated life.
The protagonist’s struggle is both easy to empathize with and instantly recognisable for anyone who has ever worked in a high pressure office job. There is a surprising amount of characterization here too and every supporting character has enough personality to ride the wave of craziness right the way through the various seasons.

Doroheodoro
Similarities – Hierarchical World
Dorohedoro is a really enjoyable anime that manages to build up an impressively realized world and inhabit it with an eclectic cast of characters. Although our lead character Caiman takes centre stage, The Family are equally as appealing here with solid character arcs and lots of good dialogue throughout.
As the story progresses, Caiman begins to piece together his past and the events that led him to the Hole. He learns that he was once a powerful Sorcerer, but was banished for using too much magic. Now, he lives in a world where sorcery is outlawed and he must live as a beast in order to survive. As he starts to piece together his past, Caiman realizes that there are others like him who have been forgotten or left behind in this idealistic world. With the help of his new friends, Caiman will travel to the Hole and find out what happened to them all.
Dorohedoro is an excellent anime that is well written and violent. It has a great cast of characters and seamless CG animation.
Our thoughts on Dorohedoro in our full season review: Dorohedoro was a great experience for all of us at the club. The players were all very friendly and the coaching staff were excellent. We enjoyed every minute of it!
Bojack Horseman
Similarities – Animals & Themes
If you’re looking for a satirical comedy that takes on mental health, strained relationships and depression, Bojack Horseman is the perfect choice. This smartly written and topical comedy dives into the subject of mental health, with clever jokes that will make you laugh out loud.
The first season of “The Crown” is slow in truth, but the rest of the show opens up in a way that is truly poignant and gripping. The show is well-made and provides a great insight into the politics and life of Queen Elizabeth II.

Undone
Similarities – Internal Conflicts
Undone is an animated series with big ideas and themes discussed, wrapped up with solid characterization and a consistently progressive plot that builds up through the episodes to the finale. The truth is revealed in the finale. ..
Alma is a young woman who has been in a coma for several months after a car accident. She wakes up to learn that she has new powers that allow her to manipulate time. Through her narration, Alma tells the story of her average life before the accident, her family and friends, and her neighbourhood. After the accident, Alma’s life changes in ways she never could have imagined. ..
A mystery series with a strong focus on character development is Undone, which works well when viewed as Alma trying to find purpose in life. Much like Legoshi and his internal conflict, Undone too has a pretty big weight on the main character’s shoulders and this translates into some wonderful characterization and intriguing relationships that develop over time.
The film, “The Boxtrolls,” is a unique and interesting animation that is well worth checking out. ..

Kill La Kill
Similarities – Mystery & School Setting
Kill La Kill is an anime with a suitably strong hook to engage you into this world immediately. Much like the Beastars setting here, the main setting is a hierarchical school ruled by the student council and its president, Satsuki. Kill La Kill has quickly become one of my favorite animes in recent years, and I can’t wait to see what happens next! ..
Ryuuko Matoi transfers to school and arrives carrying a giant sword. Only, it soon becomes clear this is actually half of a scissor. The other half is somewhere inside the school, held by a woman who killed her Father. Ryuuko is on a mission to find exactly who did this and bring them to justice.
This show has a lighthearted tone that is helped by the well-paced action scenes. It is a marmite choice; you’ll either love it or hate it. Either way, it’s still worth giving a go.
Africa no Salaryman
Similarities – Animals
An anime series set in a capitalist society in Japan, “If You’d Rather Stick to the Realm of Anthropomorphism, Africa No Salaryman is Another Animal” follows the lives of a lion, toucan and lizard as they out the lives of office workers. ..
While Aggretsuko has a certain allure and charm, its humour is well-timed and above the traditional high school level of jokes one may have come to expect from anime. It won’t be for everyone but Africa No Salaryman is absolutely bananas. If you’re in the demographic this is designed for, you’re sure to have a good time.
Banana Fish

Banana Fish is an anime series that tells the story of a group of bananas who are forced to fight for their lives in a war against other bananas. The series is full of mystery and action, and it is sure to keep you entertained for the entire duration. If you are looking for an anime that will keep you on your toes, then Banana Fish is definitely the right choice.

24 episodes of Banana Fish is a lot to take in, but the show offers a lot of rewards for your time. Some lovely twists and turns keep you engaged throughout. ..

In the middle of this bleak future, a young human girl is discovered by a golem deep in the middle of the woods. When they strike up an unlikely bond, the two set out together and begin a touching journey that ignites the core of this anime into becoming something very special. ..
This excellent show is a unique and exciting story that is well worth watching. It has excellent aesthetic qualities and an interesting story that is well worth following.
