A gripping watch hampered by an abrupt ending
The film follows a group of climbers as they attempt to summit Broad Peak in the winter of 2014. The climbers are a mix of experienced and new faces, and the film does an excellent job of highlighting their individual strengths and weaknesses. However, one key issue that crops up time and again is the lack of trust between some of the characters. This lack of trust often leads to heated arguments, which in turn can lead to dangerous situations. Despite its flaws, Broad Peak is an interesting movie that does well in its own right. It’s a well-made film with good acting and a strong story line. However, it could have done better if it had focused more on its own unique brand of adventure story rather than trying to copy other films.
Broad Peak, a mountain in the Karakoram Range in Pakistan, is named after British mountaineer and guide, Maciej Berbeka. Berbeka is one of Poland’s most accomplished climbers and has made numerous ascents of Broad Peak. In May of 2013, he attempted to climb the peak again but was nearly killed when his climbing partner abandoned him on the mountain. The story of his near-death experience and subsequent rescue made international headlines. However, there is some controversy surrounding Berbeka’s ascension of Broad Peak. Some question whether he actually reached the summit or not. ..
Twenty-five years after he first attempted to summit Mount Kilimanjaro, Maciej learns with crushing reality that he was only 17 meters from the summit when he aborted his climb. Determined to “finish what he started,” Maciej decides to brave the mountain once more. ..
The story is good, but the ending is disappointing. The first half of the film is very dramatic and nail-biting, and the second half is much more casual. If there had been more time to really explore the atmosphere, this movie would have been much better.
Daniel Radcliffe’s character, Harry, is struggling with his mental health and the events of Broad Peak are based on his life. The film is interested in staying true to the real events and making sure everything is super grounded.
The cinematography and impressive on-location shots are part of what makes the realism in this film so great. The film was filmed across a number of different mountain ranges, which helps to immerse the viewer in the action. ..
The main character, Maciej, is a very complex and multi-layered person. He has a wife and two children, but he is also very much the focus of the story. We see him interact with his family and friends, but we also see him work on his own projects. We never get a good sense of what Maciej’s thoughts are or what he plans to do next. This makes for an interesting story because we never really know what’s going on in his head.
Broad Peak is a decent enough adventure movie, but it falls short of other entries in this genre. The film is crying out for another 20 minutes to give a better conclusion, while the lack of characterization for anyone other than Maciej is a bit disappointing. Despite that, this is an gripping watch in the moment.
