Get Out

Chris Washington is invited to his girlfriend’s parents’ house for the first time. He’s worried they may not accept him as a black guy in a white neighbourhood, but quickly discovers that things aren’t what they seem. The film builds up nicely to its explosive finale.

Get Out is a well-made horror movie with some genuinely creepy scenes that complement its play on inequality and racism. Whilst Get Out never reaches the scary side of horror, it plays out more like a thriller and viewing it as such makes for a much more enjoyable watch.

Gothika

Gothika is a psychological horror that leans into its mystery and thriller elements rather than horror. Despite its so-so ending, Gothika is a pretty decent chiller.

As a psychiatrist, Miranda is used to helping inmates with their mental health issues. After a car accident leaves her husband dead, Miranda wakes up in an institution with no memory of what happened. Her only hope is to find out what happened and clear her name.

The film is not perfect, but it’s a fun ride while it lasts.

What Lies Beneath

What Lies Beneath is a dark and creepy horror story with some well-placed jump scares. The twist at the end is a nice touch.

Claire’s husband Norman is worried that she’s imagining things and starts to see ghostly images and hear strange voices around her home. When the images become real, he realizes it’s his wife’s imagination and they are happy to have a secret to keep.

The second half of the film builds up slowly before bursting into life with jump scares, thrilling reveals and some eerie segments. This makes for a thriller that still stands up 20 years later. ..

Memento

Memento is a story that plays out in reverse. This isn’t just a gimmick though, and instead the movie works beautifully by playing on this concept time and again. The story revolves around Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), who has anterograde amnesia, which means that he can’t remember anything from before the age of 25. He is able to piece together his life by watching old tapes and photos, but when he is attacked and left for dead, he starts to piece together his past. The movie is full of twists and turns, as Leonard tries to figure out who attacked him and why. ..

The protagonist of the piece has a severe case of short term memory loss and as the movie progresses, we shift further backwards through time to uncover exactly what’s going on. With the end already known, it’s left up to us to work out why this incident has occurred.

Memento is a stunning achievement and an excellent movie that’ll keep you guessing until the end.

Perfect Stranger

Perfect Stranger is one of the divisive entries on this list, but it’s undeniably similar to Hypnotic in terms of set-up and execution. Both films involve a stranger who comes into a person’s life and starts to change it for the better. However, while Hypnotic is more lighthearted and fun, Perfect Stranger is more serious and suspenseful. ..

Rowena Price is a journalist who goes undercover to investigate shady businessman Harrison Hill. Posing as one of his temps, she enters into a game of cat and mouse, determined to oust him as the killer. ..

The murder of a popular music artist has left the townspeople in a state of confusion and fear. Who could have done this?

Shutter Island

Shutter Island is a film that will leave you feeling disturbed and unsettled. It is an atmospheric and moody psychological drama that will keep you engaged from the beginning to the end. ..

In 1954, US Marshal Teddy Daniels investigates the disappearance of a murderer who has escaped from a hospital for the criminally insane. The murderer, known as “The Mad Monk,” is believed to have killed dozens of people and is on the loose. Daniels uses his skills as a detective to track down The Mad Monk and bring him to justice.

This film is a gem that deserves more attention than it has been given. If you haven’t seen it yet, Shutter Island is definitely worth a watch.

The Hypnotized

The Hypnotized is a Korean movie that tells a creepy story about a woman who is obsessed with hypnosis and the man who uses it to control her.

A psychiatrist who is assigned to care for a patient in the hospital soon becomes obsessed with her and uses hypnosis to have his wicked way with her. ..

The film has some great visuals and the acting is pretty good all round too. ..

Jacob’s Ladder

Jacob’s Ladder is a psychologically charged experience that’s easily one of the more unsettling movies on this list. Mourning his dead child, the movie revolves around haunted Vietnam War Vet Jacob, who tries to uncover his past while suffering from a severe case of dissociation.

As he dives deeper into his own subconscious, Jacob struggles to distinguish the different between the waking and dream world, leading to a mesmerizing and scary story to follow.

The Hypnotist

The Hypnotized is a movie that centers on the use of hypnosis, this time coming straight out of Sweden. The story follows a group of people who are taken under the control of a hypnotist and used for their own gain.

The detective, played by Tom Hanks, is paired with Dr. Kay Scarpetta, played by Julia Roberts, in order to help the witness cope with the trauma of what happened. The movie is based on a novel of the same name by Patricia Cornwell. ..

The thriller is a solid piece of work, but it could use some more hypnotism.

Cure (1997)

Cure is a beautifully written picture from start to finish. It is an underrated gem from the 90’s, and should not be missed. ..

A series of gruesome murders has been sweeping across Tokyo. All of the victims have been found with a bloody X carved into their necks. So far, there is no connection between the victims, but police are still investigating. ..

Detective Takabe and psychologist Sakuma are the two officers called in to try and figure out what’s going on with this case, centering on a strange man who seems to be the only link to all of it. ..

Cure is a well-paced hypnotic thriller that’s sure to keep you hooked from the first minutes. The hypnotic hooks are strong and make for an interesting watch, making this one to watch for fans of Hypnotic.
